Educational centre for higher and secondary education

Completing a formal education in Spain – from the school-leaving certificate (Bachillerato) to a PhD (Doctorado) – is one of the most reliable grounds for long-term residence in the country. A residence permit for study purposes (estancia por estudios) at an accredited university or school not only entitles you to stay in Spain legally for the entire duration of your studies, but also opens up direct pathways to finding work and obtaining a work residence permit upon completion of your programme.

Who is it suitable for?
This residence permit is intended for non-EU nationals who have a direct family relationship with a Spanish citizen. According to an official source, the categories of applicants include:
Prospective students and current university students applying for undergraduate (Grado), postgraduate (Máster) or doctoral (Doctorado) programmes.
Students enrolled in higher vocational education (Formación Profesional de Grado Superior) who are studying a sought-after specialism.
Upper-sixth form students (Bachillerato) who wish to obtain a Spanish school leaving certificate in order to progress to university.
Participants in official exchange programmes between educational institutions.
Academic staff and researchers visiting to carry out work within the university or research centre (on a voluntary basis).
Key legislation
  • The procedure for obtaining and renewing a student residence permit is governed by the general regulations on matters relating to foreign nationals:
Law 4/2000 (Ley Orgánica 4/2000) on the rights and freedoms of foreign nationals in Spain.
Regulations implementing the Act (Royal Decree 557/2011), Articles 37–44, which set out in detail the conditions for staying in the country for the purpose of study.
Requirements
The requirements here are stricter than those for language courses and include proof of academic ability.
Admission to an educational institution: Receive an official letter of admission (Carta de Admisión) to a full-time programme at an accredited university, business school or secondary school.
Academic equivalence: You must first undergo the process of having your previous qualifications recognised. For admission to a bachelor’s degree programme, this involves the recognition of your school leaving certificate and, as a rule, sitting entrance examinations (PCE/EBAU). For a master’s degree programme, this involves the legalisation of your degree certificate.
Financial means: Provide evidence of sufficient funds to cover living and study costs.
Minimum amount — 100% of the annual IPREM (€600 per month or €7,200 per year for 2025). In practice, when processing university visas, consulates prefer to see proof of payment for the first year of study and evidence of funds for living expenses in excess of this amount.
Health insurance: Take out an annual health insurance policy with a company accredited in Spain. The insurance must provide comprehensive cover, with no excess (sin copagos) and no waiting period (sin carencias).
Long-term requirements (for programmes lasting more than 180 days):
  • A certificate of good conduct from the countries where you have resided over the past 5 years (with an Apostille and a certified translation).
  • Medical certificate confirming the absence of any serious illnesses.
For minors: A notarised consent form from both parents authorising the move to and study in Spain, as well as details of a guardian in Spain.
Required documents
(main list)
National visa application form (when applying at the Consulate) or Form Modelo EX-00 (when applying in Spain).
A valid passport.
Letter of admission (Carta de Admisión) and proof of course payment (Matrícula).
A certified copy or legalised diploma of previous education.
Proof of financial means (bank statements, sponsorship letters).
Health insurance policy.
Proof of residence (tenancy agreement, student accommodation).
A certificate of good conduct and a medical certificate (where applicable, with an apostille and a translation).

Application procedure

The main and most reliable way is to apply for a D visa through the Spanish Consulate in your country.
  • Receipt

Choose a programme, prepare and authenticate your academic documents, sit the exams (if required) and obtain your Letter of Admission.
  • Gathering documents for a visa

Gather a complete set of financial, medical and personal documents in accordance with the Consulate’s requirements.
  • Submission at the Consulate

Book an appointment and submit your documents in person. The processing time is approximately 1–2 months.
  • Obtaining a D visa

If your application is approved, you will be issued with a 90-day visa to enter Spain.
  • Obtaining a Resident Card (TIE)

Upon arrival in Spain, you must register with the police within one month to have your fingerprints taken and to obtain a student residence card (TIE), which will serve as your main identification document for the whole year.
