Who is it suitable for?
Foreign nationals who have resided legally and continuously in Spain, with the required period depending on the applicant’s personal circumstances:

1 year

Spouses of Spanish nationals, children or grandchildren of Spanish nationals who were born in Spain.

2 years

Citizens of Ibero-American countries (Latin America, Andorra, the Philippines, Portugal, Equatorial Guinea, Sephardic Jews).

5 years

Persons who have been granted refugee status or asylum.

10 years

The standard period for all other categories of foreign nationals.

Requirements
Citizenship is granted for life.
Length of residence: The relevant period of legal, continuous and uninterrupted residence prior to the application.
Integration: Proof of a sufficient level of integration into Spanish society, including passing two exams:
  • DELE A2 (level of proficiency in Spanish).
  • CCSE (knowledge of the Constitution and Spanish culture).
Good character: No criminal record and good civic conduct (buena conducta cívica).

Application procedure

  • Gathering documents:

    Collection and legalisation (where necessary) of all documents, including the child’s and parents’ birth certificates.
  • Proof of citizenship:

    Proof of Spanish nationality of one or both parents (possession of a DNI or registration in the Consular Register).
  • Submission of an application (by right):

    Submission of an application to the Civil Registry (Registro Civil) in the child’s place of residence, provided that at least one of the parents was Spanish at the time of the child’s birth.
  • Submission of an application (optional):

    A declaration by the parents (or by the child themselves if aged 14 or over) regarding the choice of Spanish nationality, if the parents acquired Spanish nationality after the child’s birth.
  • Registration:

    Registration of a child’s birth and nationality with the Spanish Civil Registry (Registro Civil).
  • Obtaining documents:

    Applying for a child’s first Spanish passport and DNI.
