Renewal of a residence permit without the right to work (Autorización de Residencia Temporal No Lucrativa) allows wealthy foreign nationals to continue living in Spain without engaging in any gainful employment or professional activities.

Who is it suitable for?
This extension is intended for non-EU nationals who:
Hold a valid non-lucrative residence permit.
They wish to continue living in Spain without working. Non-working Spain, pensioners in Spain, renewal of a residence permit without employment
They can confirm that sufficient funds are available from passive sources.
Key legislation
  • Law 4/2000 (Organic Law 4/2000).
    Royal Decree 1155/2024, Article 64.
Requirements
The key requirement is to maintain financial and medical coverage, as well as to comply with the duration of stay.
Financial eligibility: Proof of sufficient funds for the entire duration of the extension. For the main applicant: at least 400% of the annual IPREM. For each family member: an additional 100% of the annual IPREM.
Insurance: A private health insurance policy with full cover (no co-payments) for the entire duration of the extension.
Length of stay: The applicant must not have been absent from Spain for more than 305 days during the entire period of validity of their previous residence permit (1 year).
School education (for children): If the applicant has school-age children living in Spain, they must be enrolled in educational institutions.
Validity period: The first and second renewals are valid for two years. After two renewals, you may apply for permanent residence (Larga Duración).

Renewal application form (Official Form EX-01).
A valid passport.
A copy of the current TIE.
Documents proving financial standing (bank statements, investment certificates, proof of passive income).
Health insurance.
Proof of payment of the fee (Form 790): Code 052, section 1.1.2 (for renewal of residence).

Application procedure

The procedure is carried out at the Foreigners’ Office (Oficina de Extranjería) in your area of residence.
  • Serving:

    The application must be submitted within 60 calendar days before the expiry of the current residence permit or within 90 days after its expiry.
  • Consideration:

    The processing time is up to three months. Submitting an application extends your legal stay.
  • Obtaining a TIE:

    Once approved, you must apply for a new TIE card at the police station.
