Renewal of residence permits for highly qualified specialists and their family members

The renewal of a residence permit for highly qualified professionals (Autorización de Residencia de Profesionales Altamente Cualificados – TRAC) is governed by the Entrepreneurs Act (Law 14/2013) and is more flexible and faster than the standard procedure.

Who is it suitable for?
This extension is intended for non-EU nationals who:
Hold a valid residence permit for highly qualified professionals (or an ‘EU Blue Card’ – Tarjeta Azul-UE).
They continue to work in a managerial or highly skilled role whilst retaining the minimum wage.
They wish to extend this status to themselves and their family members.
Key legislation
  • Law 14/2013 (Ley 14/2013) on support for entrepreneurs and their internationalisation, Articles 71–78.
    Implementing Regulation (Royal Decree 695/2015). The authorisation is extended for two years.
Requirements
A key requirement is that the grounds on which the original authorisation was granted must remain valid.
Work experience:
  • You must continue your employment or professional relationship with the company that initiated the original authorisation, or commence a new role with similar terms and conditions.
  • Maintenance of a salary that meets the criteria for a highly qualified specialist, as set annually.
No criminal record in Spain.
Family members (spouses, children, parents) renew their residence permits at the same time as the main applicant.
Tax and social security arrears: Neither the main applicant nor the company has any outstanding debts.
Required documents
Main list
Renewal application form (Model MI-T, standard).
A valid passport.
A copy of the current TIE.
An employment contract (or company certificate) stating the position held and the salary.
Certificates confirming that the company has no outstanding debts.
Documents proving family relationship (for family members).
Proof of payment of the fee (Form 790): Code 052, sections 2.2.1–2.2.7

Application procedure

The procedure is handled by the Unit for Large Enterprises and Strategic Groups (Unidad de Grandes Empresas y Colectivos Estratégicos – UGE-CE). The application must be submitted within 60 calendar days before the expiry of the current residence permit or 90 days after its expiry (submission after expiry carries a risk, but is accepted by the UGE-CE).
  • Serving:

    Applications must be submitted exclusively online via the UGE-CE electronic register.
  • Consideration:

    The processing time under Law 14/2013 is 20 working days. Failure to receive a response implies approval (silencio administrativo positivo).
  • Obtaining a TIE:

    Once approved, you must apply for a new TIE card at the police station.
