Permanent residence in Spain

A Permanent Residence Permit (PRP) in Spain, or Residencia de Larga Duración (RD-LD), is a permit that grants the right to live and work in Spain indefinitely under the same conditions as Spanish citizens.

Who is it suitable for?
Non-EU foreign nationals who:
Have lived in Spain legally and continuously for 5 years.
Key legislation
  • Royal Decree 1155/2024 (Article 148 et seq.).
    Organic Law 4/2000.
Requirements
The permit is issued for an indefinite period. The residence card (TIE) is renewed every 5 years.
Length of residence: Provide evidence of legal and continuous residence in Spain for 5 years with a valid residence permit.
Continuity: Compliance with the conditions for continuous residence: no absences from Spain for more than 6 consecutive months, and the total duration of absences over a 5-year period must not exceed 10 months (or 1 year, if the absences are work-related).
General requirements: No criminal convictions in Spain or in countries of previous residence; no ban on entry to the Schengen Area.

Main list
Application for permanent residence (Form EX-11).
A valid passport.
Copies of all previous TIE reports.
Certificate of no criminal convictions (from Spain only).
Proof of payment of the fee.

Application procedure

Submit an application to the Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjería) 60 days before or within 90 days after the expiry of your current residence permit.
  • Gathering documents:

    A complete set of documents, including the application form (EX-11), a valid passport and copies of all previous TIE permits.
  • Payment of fees:

    Payment of the government fee for the consideration of the application.
  • Consideration:

    Awaiting a decision from the Immigration Office. The official processing time is up to three months.
  • Obtaining a TIE:

    Once your application has been approved, you will need to book an appointment with the police (Cita de Huellas) to have your fingerprints taken and collect your new residence card (TIE), which is valid for five years.
